Weighing Espresso Shots on the La Marzocco Linea Micra
Once you start weighing your espresso, it’s hard to go back. Dosing by weight and measuring your yield turns espresso from guesswork into something repeatable. Here’s how to weigh shots on the La Marzocco Linea Micra — and how to do it without a scale cluttering your drip tray.
Why weigh your espresso?
Espresso is about ratios. Weighing your dose (coffee in) and your yield (espresso out) lets you hit a consistent brew ratio — commonly around 1:2, for example 18 g in to 36 g out. Once you know your ratio, you can adjust taste deliberately instead of chasing it shot to shot. A timer and a scale are the single biggest step toward repeatable espresso at home.
Weighing the dose vs. weighing in the cup
- Dose (coffee in): weigh your grounds before tamping to keep your input consistent every time.
- Yield (espresso out): place your cup on a scale under the portafilter and watch the weight climb as you pull the shot, stopping at your target.
Weighing the yield in real time is where a good espresso scale — like the Acaia Lunar — earns its place. The catch on a compact machine like the Linea Micra: there’s rarely room for a scale under the group head.
The Linea Micra scale problem
The Linea Micra’s stock drip tray leaves little clearance, and balancing a scale on top is fiddly and messy. That’s exactly why we built drip trays that integrate the Acaia Lunar directly into the machine:
- Centered drip tray — positions the Lunar directly under the group head, with up to 15 mm extra cup clearance.
- Offset drip tray — mounts the Lunar to the left for single or double spouts, also with up to 15 mm clearance and a magnetized weighing plate for bottomless shots.
- Minimalist drip tray — a clean stainless-steel replacement if you prefer to weigh elsewhere.
A clean weighing workflow on the Linea Micra
- Weigh and grind your dose (for example, 18 g).
- Distribute, tamp, and lock in the portafilter.
- Place your cup on the scale and tare it to zero.
- Start the shot and the timer together, and watch the yield climb.
- Stop at your target weight — around 36 g for a 1:2 ratio.

Frequently asked questions
What brew ratio should I use for espresso?
A 1:2 ratio (for example 18 g in, 36 g out) is a common starting point. Adjust from there to taste.
Do you need a scale for espresso?
Not strictly, but it’s the fastest path to consistency — weighing your dose and yield removes most of the guesswork.
Can you fit an Acaia Lunar under the Linea Micra?
Yes. The stock tray leaves little room, but an integrated drip tray positions the Lunar under or beside the group head with extra cup clearance.
Weighing your shots is the simplest upgrade to consistency — and on the Linea Micra it can look clean too. See our Acaia Lunar drip trays for the Linea Micra.
